Michael is one of the few people in town to befriend James, he is very open about his feelings towards him. Jam feels the same way but doesn't think about it much. They have the same sense of humor and make a great team.

Cass is a motherly figure for James, she's protective of him, and he loves her almost more than anything. They're able to relate to each other and when it matters most, Cass makes sure to give him the most manipulative advice.

Antares hates Jam with a passion, he acts as if they have a rivalry but it is one-sided. James being in a position of power over him makes him irrationally angry, but he learns to tolerate it with time. He's especially cruel in training.

Unlike his brother, Volo adores Jam and only wants for him to be happy. Volo is unable to reach out to him when he's having trouble, though he wants to. Jam sometimes mischaracterizes him. They get along regardless.
